The Best of Vine Leaves Literary Journal 2015, which will feature my piece called ‘October’, will be published on 1st December 2015 and is available to pre-order now! It will be the last time that Vine Leaves Literary Journal will be publishing an annual anthology of their best work, so make sure you grab one whilst you can.

I’m really excited about this release! If you would like to pre-order a copy you can do so by following this link here.

Again, I’m delighted to have been included in this anthology, and thank Vine Leaves Literary Journal for selecting ‘October’.

‘Introductions’ and ‘Chain’ to be published in SpaLife Magazine!

Two flash fictions of mine, ‘Introductions’ and ‘Chain’ are to be published in SpaLife Magazine, a magazine created and published by Bath Spa University students. Here’s this from their website, which I’ve included a link to because they do more than just a print magazine!

SpaLife Magazine is published in a print edition once a term, and online. All content is produced by student volunteers who want you to keep up to date with the latest university news and events, entertainment, travel and more.  Pick up your copy around campus or via the SU website.

I’m really excited to pick up a print copy of this magazine later this year, and will link to the two stories when they’re published in the online edition too. It feels great to have work published in this magazine, to have my fellow students appreciate and accept my writing, and to have new students read my work, to reach a new audience. I also feel as if I’m giving back a little to my university, as if I’m saying ‘here’s a little bit of what I can do thanks to the skills you’ve helped me develop’.

‘Introductions’ is a flash fiction about a guy who walks in on his sister kissing someone. She introduces him to her brother, but they’ve met before… and ‘Chain’ is about a being stood up due to miscommunication, and is more humorous in tone than my usual writing.

‘October’ to be Featured in The Best of Vine Leaves Literary Journal 2015!

I had some wicked news this morning: my vignette ‘October’ has been selected for The Best of Vine Leaves Literary Journal 2015. I’m so thrilled! ‘October’ was originally published in Issue #15 in July of this year, and I’m surprised and delighted that it has been selected to be considered as one of the best pieces of writing to have been published by Vine Leaves Literary Journal this year! It’ll also be their last Best of anthology that they’ll be publishing, which is sad, but it feels good to have made the cut!

I’ll post more information once it has been published, though in the meantime you should check out their submission guidelines and submit to their next issue when submissions are open, and you can check out previous issues online too. You can do all this by visiting their website here.

‘Variations of Normality’ Published and Due to be on Exhibition by City Reads, Brighton and Hove — Young, Human and Creative!

A flash fiction of mine called ‘Variations of Normality’, which I submitted to the ‘Young, Human and Creative’ competition, has been published online by City Reads, Brighton and Hove, and will also be available to read *in real life* at Jubilee Library (Brighton) in the Young People’s Area from Saturday 10th October (until I don’t know when).

Unfortunately I didn’t win, but it is wonderful to have my work exhibited for people to read among other brilliant flash fiction, poetry, photography, and graphic novel excerpts, all by people between 16 and 25.

‘Variations of Normality’ is, admittedly, a very loose interpretation of the theme, which was what it means to be human. My flash fiction is about my experience during the 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, and is focused on the idea of normality and what is considered as “normal” is different for different people: for me, this situation was an extreme situation, as it was for most people there, but something like an earthquake isn’t as unfamiliar to others who live in different parts of the world. My interpretation was that to be human is to experience different things: none two humans experience life in the same way, or have the same thoughts, feelings, or outlooks.

If you’d like to read my flash fiction but can’t make it down to the exhibition you can do so by following this link here. I hope you enjoy reading it, the other entries, and the winners.

Landmarks: 2015 National Flash-Fiction Day – Out Now!

Landmarks, the 2015 National Flash-Fiction Anthology (pictured below) is now available from Amazon in paperback by following this link. It will feature my flash fiction ‘Saharan Shades’.

There are over 60 flash fictions in this anthology, which is based on the theme of Geography, and having volunteered behind-the-scenes to help put this anthology together I can tell you now that it is a great anthology of flash fiction. There are hugely talented flash fiction writers included in this collection and a vast array of stories.

My flash, ‘Saharan Shades’, is a tale of fear, beauty, and thought captured during six thoughts in the Sahara desert. I won’t give away the rest! I’m looking forward to receiving my copy so I can read these brilliant stories on the page.

Congratulations to everyone who has been published in this year’s anthology! I’m looking forward to the official National Flash-Fiction Day event, which is at Foyles Bookstore in Bristol on Saturday 27th June. Entry is free!

Upcoming Publication in Vine Leaves Literary Journal!

Whenever I get an email from somewhere I’ve submitted writing to I’m always both dreading and excited to open it and read what’s inside. It’s either a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’ – simple as that. Every writer knows that feeling when it’s a ‘no’, but it is wonderful when you open that email and it’s a ‘yes’!

On July 17th Vine Leaves Literary Journal will launch Issue #15, which will be available online and in print, and will include my vignette ‘October’.

It’s fantastic to be a part of this literary journal. They publish vignettes, which the journal describe on their website as the following:

“Vignette” is a word that originally meant “something that may be written on a vine-leaf.” It’s a snapshot in words. It differs from flash fiction or a short story in that its aim doesn’t lie within the traditional realms of structure or plot. Instead, the vignette focuses on one element, mood, character, setting or object. It’s descriptive, excellent for character or theme exploration and wordplay. Through a vignette, you create an atmosphere.

You can read, or indeed purchase, past issues of Vine Leaves Literary Journal on their website, which can be found by clicking this link –> Vine Leaves Journal.

I’m looking forward to publication day and I shall post links when ‘October’ is published! Can’t wait to receive my contributor’s copy!
